The Cinematic Life of Jean-Pierre Léaud
For nearly sixty years, French actor Jean-Pierre Léaud has been lending his presence to some of cinema’s greatest films. Now synonymous with the French New Wave, Léaud began his career as a boy, growing up on-screen in Truffaut’s Antoine Doinel films and maturing into roles for directors like Jacques Rivette, Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Jean Eustache. This Sunday at the Cannes Film Festival—where his latest film, Albert Serra’s La Mort de Louis XIV, just premiered—Léaud will receive the festival’s annual honorary Palme d’Or. In celebration of the actor’s career, we’re taking a look back at some of his great roles.
