What’s Happening on Hulu

Autumn_large

In honor of this weekend’s celebration of fathers, we’re taking the occasion to look back at some of Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu’s Family Portraits for our free festival on Hulu. This week’s selection features early silent gems as well as later classics, including: That Night’s Wife, Tokyo Chorus, Passing Fancy, I Was Born, But . . . , Late Spring, Early Summer, and Tokyo Story.

To cap off the series, we’re also revisiting Ozu’s last film, 1962’s An Autumn Afternoon. Captured in exquisite color by cinematographer Yuharu Atsuta, Ozu’s longtime collaborator, this heartrending story portrays the emotional journey of a widower (portrayed by frequent Ozu player Chishu Ryu) who is coming to terms with modernity and with the idea of his grown daughter’s eventual departure from the home for marriage. You can watch the Japanese master’s graceful final work below, or over at Hulu—and remember, if you subscribe to Hulu for just $7.99 a month, you can see more than 900 Criterion films commercial-free, anytime.
