What’s Happening on Hulu

The year 1966 was a monumental one for cinema, and this week we’re celebrating some of the great films released during those twelve months with Fiftieth Anniversary, our free festival on Hulu. The selection ranges from classic neorealism to existential Japanese sci-fi, including: Ömer Lütfi Akad’s Law of the Border, Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, Jiří Menzel’s Closely Watched Trains, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers, Volker Schlöndorff’s Young Törless, and Hiroshi Teshigahara’s The Face of Another.

This week, we’re also hoping you’ll take a look back at Larisa Shepitko’s Wings, completed a few years after the director graduated from the All-Russian State Institute for Cinematography. Although this was Shepitko’s debut feature, the film demonstrates the director’s already well-honed vision and command of her actors. Centering on a former WWII fighter pilot (played by Maya Bulgakova) who becomes a school principal in a rural town after the war, the film juxtaposes the experience of life in wartime with the subsequent return to routine existence. You can watch Wings below, or over at Hulu—and remember, if you subscribe to Hulu for just $7.99 a month, you can see more than 900 Criterion films commercial-free, anytime.
