Repertory Pick: Agnès Varda in New York

This weekend, take a respite from the summer heat by heading over to Manhattan’s Metrograph theater for a screening of Agnès Varda’s 1969 film Lions Love (. . . and Lies). Made during Varda’s years living in California with her husband Jacques Demy, this documentary-fiction hybrid, infused with Varda’s beautifully inventive filmmaking style, drops her French sensibility into the sun-dappled Hollywood Hills. The film also brings the countercultural spirit of New York to the West coast, creating a fascinating time capsule of late ’60s America, starring Warhol darling Viva, as well as James Rado and Gerome Ragni (the creators of the musical Hair) and filmmaker Shirley Clarke (as herself). If you’re in New York this weekend, you can see the film on Saturday evening, and in the meantime, read Michael Koresky’s liner notes for our Eclipse series Agnès Varda in California.
