Celebrate the Fourth of July by watching a selection of indie films gems collected in American Independent, our free festival on Hulu. Highlighting works from the indie film movement of the past half century, the movies on view this week range from an unforgettable ’70s portrait of a woman on the edge to a pioneering work that helped usher in ’90s New Queer Cinema. Beginning with Robert Downey Sr.’s experimental favorite Chafed Elbows, this week’s offerings include: John Cassavetes’s A Woman Under the Influence; John Huston’s Wise Blood; Gus Van Sant’s Mala Noche; John Elias Michalakis’s I Was a Teenage Zombie; Allison Anders, Dean Lent, and Kurt Voss’s Border Radio; Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train; Lodge Kerrigan’s Clean, Shaven; and Steven Soderbergh’s Schizopolis.

In addition to these great titles, we’re also suggesting you revisit David Gordon Green’s 2000 feature George Washington. Gracefully shot by cinematographer Tim Orr, the film was Green’s directorial debut, establishing his distinct cinematic voice and putting him on the map as one of the most interesting filmmakers to emerge on the indie scene. Set in rural North Carolina, this melancholy coming-of-age story follows a group of kids over the course of one summer, depicting the choices they are forced to confront in the wake of tragedy. You can watch the film below or over at Hulu—and remember, if you subscribe to Hulu for just $7.99 a month, you can see more than 900 Criterion films commercial-free, anytime.
