The Dynamic Women of Delphine Seyrig
Best known for her roles in Alain Resnais’s Last Year at Marienbad and Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Delphine Seyrig was one of the most captivating actors of the French New Wave, renowned for the intensity with which she embodied her characters and her contributions to some of the most daring films of her time.
Just as important as her work on-screen were her pursuits as a feminist, which included directing the 1981 documentary Sois belle et tais-toi (Be Pretty and Shut Up), a portrait of women in the film industry, and founding the feminist film archive Centre audiovisuel Simone de Beauvoir in Paris.
Today, in celebration of our release of Resnais’s 1963 Seyrig-led masterwork Muriel, or The Time of Return, we’re reflecting on five of her unforgettable performances.
