Whether he’s mixing a cocktail of irreverent humor and grotesque violence or adding a touch of psychedelia to a historical drama, British director Ben Wheatley delights in bending genre conventions to his will in films like Kill List, A Field in England, and High-Rise. His latest, the 1970s-set comedic thriller Free Fire, opened earlier this month, and for the occasion we invited him to take a trip inside our closet. A voracious cinephile, Wheatley shared his thoughts on some of his favorite titles in the collection, noting his love for the camera movements in Grey Gardens and the terror he felt watching Things to Come as a child.
