Kim Jee-woon (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) has completed production on Inrang (working title), a remake of the Hiroyuki Okiura’s 1999 animated thriller Jinroh: The Wolf Brigade (image above), reports Korean Film News (via Rubén Collazos at Cine maldito). “Set in the near future, the film takes place in a world where the governments of South and North Korea are on the cusp of reunification, following seven years of preparation. When demonstrations opposing the unification turn more violent, a special police force is formed to combat them.” The cast features Gang Dong-won, Han Hyo-joo and Jung Woo-sung.

Miranda July has lined up Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Richard Jenkins, and Debra Winger for her untitled heist feature. From the Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit and Mia Galuppo: “The script centers on a woman named Old Dolio, whose life is turned upside down when her parents, amateur con artists, invite an outsider to join their biggest heist yet. Wood is Old Dolio, while Jenkins and Winger are the shady parents who are confronted by the mistakes of their poor parenting. Rodriguez is the woman who learns of the family's secrets and is brought into the fold.”

“Jason Schwartzman and Cherry Jones are boarding Amy Poehler’s feature directorial debut Wine Country,” reports reports Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro. The story “follows longtime friends who head to Napa for the weekend to celebrate a fiftieth birthday.” Also in the cast are Poehler herself, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, and Emily Spivey.

Also, Robert Downey Jr. and an army of producers have “announced the entire cast for Universal’s live action-animated hybrid The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle which is due out on April 12, 2019.” Joining Downey, Jr., Ralph Fiennes, Emma Thompson, Tom Holland, and Selena Gomez will be Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Harry Collett, and Jim Broadbent in live action roles. Marion Cotillard, Octavia Spencer, Kumail Nanjiani, Rami Malek, Craig Robinson, John Cena, Carmen Ejogo, and Frances De La Tour “will all provide voiceovers.”

Bill Nighy, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jay Baruchel are joining Andrea Riseborough, Tahar Rahim, and Zoe Kazan in Lone Scherfig’s next movie, reports Andreas Wiseman for Deadline. The currently untitled project formerly known as Secrets from the Russian Tea Room “will chart the story of a group of people going through the worst crises of their lives. An opulent Russian restaurant in New York City will provide much of the movie’s backdrop. Characters include an ER nurse who runs an eclectic therapy group (Riseborough); an ex-con turned restaurant manager (Rahim); a mother looking to avoid her abusive cop husband (Kazan); a young man in desperate need of a job (Landry Jones); a lawyer with high ethics but low self-esteem (Baruchel); and the owner of the restaurant and the grandson of Russian immigrants (Nighy).”

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston are re-teaming for Murder Mystery, a Netflix comedy to be directed by Kyle Newacheck, reports Variety’s Justin Kroll. “The story follows a New York cop (Sandler) and his wife (Aniston), who become prime suspects in the murder of an elderly billionaire while vacationing in Europe.”

The Tracking Board’s Jeff Sneider’s also reported on this story, adding in passing that “Sandler has also been eyed to replace Jonah Hill as the lead in the Safdie brothers’ next film Uncut Gems, but he hasn’t officially signed on at this time.” As Rodrigo Perez notes at the Playlist, Uncut Gems “is a Martin Scorsese-produced Safdies picture that takes place in the corrupt world of New York City’s diamond district, with Hill originally set to play the lead. Uncut Gems was written by the writer/directors along with their regular collaborator Ronald Bronstein who co-wrote the brother’s last picture, the anxiety-inducing crime drama Good Time starring Robert Pattinson. Bronstein has co-written on several of their directorial efforts including Heaven Knows What and Daddy Longlegs.” And his 2007 directorial debut, Frownland, is now streaming on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck.

Back to Kroll, who reports that Scarlett Johansson is “in final negotiations” to star in Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, which is “set during World War II and centers on a young German boy who finds out that his mother, to be played by Johansson, is hiding a Jewish girl in their home.”

Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah) will direct The Hunt, “a spec script written by Lost and The Leftovers co-creator Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse,” reports Variety’s Dave McNary. No details on the story yet, but “Jason Blum will produce for his Blumhouse Productions alongside Lindelof,” so it may be spooky.

Also, Olivia Munn is joining Justin Theroux and Anthony LaPaglia in Justine Bateman’s feature debut. “Violet follows a rising film executive who lives according to the Voice (Theroux) in her head, until unexpectedly realizing the truth—it’s been lying about everything. LaPaglia portrays her boss, who dilutes her confidence in a way similar to the Voice.”

Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) will direct Guantanamo Diary, “which follows the tribulations of forty-five-year-old Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a man who was a suspected terrorist and had been incarcerated at Guantanamo bay for fifteen years without ever being charged with a crime or having the opportunity to defend himself in court.” Anita Busch has more at Deadline.

TheWrap’s Umberto Gonzalez reports that cinematographer and director Reed Morano (Meadowland, The Handmaid’s Tale) is “in talks” to take on Keeper of the Diary, which would be “about Otto Frank’s search for a publisher for the diary his teenage daughter kept while they hid from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands. Anne Frank died in a concentration camp just weeks before it was liberated; Otto was the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust.”

SERIES

Jay Roach, “who won an Emmy for Game Change, HBO's dramatization of the 2008 presidential election,” will direct an adaptation of Michael Wolff’s bestselling Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House. Lesley Goldberg has the story in the Hollywood Reporter.

Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones) “has closed a deal to play Prince Philip in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Crown,” reports Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. “This is the role that Paul Bettany had been in early talks to play before he abdicated for unspecified reasons.”

Liu Cixin’s bestselling, award-winning 2008 novel The Three-Body Problem is “set in China and, in brief, is about aliens readying to invade Earth,” writes Yohana Desta for Vanity Fair, and Amazon aims to turn it into a three-season series. “How much will that cost? A smooth $1 billion. That may be a drop in the bucket compared to Jeff Bezos’s net worth, but it’s also a hefty enough sum to make this potential adaptation one of the most expensive shows of all time—and that’s before production even begins.”

Alex Gibney is developing a documentary series based on Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian’s new biography, Tiger Woods, reports Variety’s Justin Kroll.

Frank Miller (Sin City) and screenwriter and producer Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots) are “writing a book and TV series based on it simultaneously,” reports Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva.Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.” Netflix has ordered up ten episodes.

Also, Sissy Spacek is joining Julia Roberts, Bobby Cannavale, and Stephan James in Amazon’s Homecoming, “a psychological thriller that centers on Heidi (Roberts), a caseworker at a secret government facility, and a soldier (James) eager to rejoin civilian life.”

Augustine Frizzell (Never Goin’ Back) will direct the pilot for HBO’s “Kids-meets-Trainspotting” series Euphoria, which “follows the true story of a teenager who was murdered outside a club,” reports Deadline’s Peter White. “It chronicles the lives of the teens from the club a year after the tragedy and the paths they take to cope and escape reality.”
