New York. The tenth edition of Films on the Green, a series of free screenings of French films in the city’s parks, is on through September 7. Jim Jarmusch is one of the ten filmmakers and artists who’s selected a title for the lineup and his choice, Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt (1963), screens tonight in Transmitter Park. “I picked it for a number of reasons,” he tells the New York Times’ Mekado Murphy. “For one, there are a lot of beautiful exteriors of Capri in the film, which I thought might be very nice outdoors, rather than maybe showing a more enclosed film by Bresson or something. I like that it’s in color and in CinemaScope and that the film itself takes place during the summer. I also like very much the genre of films about films.”
“This evening,” writes Jon Dieringer at Screen Slate, “Anthology Film Archives welcomes Tommy Turner for the premiere of new 16mm preservations of his arresting, transgressive Super 8 films Simonland and Rat Trap, made in collaboration respectively with Richard Kern and Tessa Hughes-Freeland, and a circa-2000 preservation of Where Evil Dwells, made with David Wojnarowicz. Turner will be on hand for a Q&A, which I’m moderating in the capacity of one of the people who worked on the effort to preserve Turner’s films along with Brent Phillips, Bill Brand, and Rebecca Cleman.”
The Film Society of Lincoln Center will present ’77, “a 32-film series surveying the sweeping cinematic landscape of a prolific year in cinema, in the United States and around the world,” from August 4 through 17.

Los Angeles. Before tomorrow evening’s thirtieth anniversary screening of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket at the Egyptian, Jim Hemphill will talk with two of the leads, Matthew Modine and Vincent D'Onofrio.
A Single Frame: Celebrating Twenty Years of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers, an exhibition of thirty-five set photos that were taken during film productions all over the world, is on view at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study through January 1, 2018. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has posted an extensive preview.
Berkeley. The Pacific Film Archive series Band of Outsiders: Women Crime Writers is on through August 17.
Cleveland. “The Power of Rock, a 12-minute film by Jonathan Demme, the Oscar-winning director who died of cancer and heart disease in April, is the centerpiece of a new exhibit opening this weekend at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” reports Greg Evans for Deadline. “The film features footage of Rock Hall induction ceremonies of such performers as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Chuck Berry, Joan Jett, U2, Blondie, Metallica, Green Day, and many others.”

Toronto. Tonight, TIFF Cinematheque presents Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and on July 16, René Clément’s Purple Noon (1960).
Arles. “It was not a photographer who made me want to become a photographer,” Audrey Tautou tells Hettie Judah in T Magazine. From Monday through September 24, “the annual Rencontres d’Arles photography festival will show Tautou’s photographic work for the first time.”
Bilbao. Bill Viola: A Retrospective opens today at the Guggenheim; it’s on through November 9.
