The twenty-fourth annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were the big televisual event of the weekend, but let’s mention first that Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water “took the top prize at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday, an honor that often predicts the best picture winner at the Oscars,” as Stephanie Goodman reports for the New York Times. “The producers’ choice has gone on to win the academy’s big prize eight of the last ten years. But don’t discount the exceptions: last year La La Land won the PGA but lost best picture to Moonlight, and the year before, The Big Short prevailed with the producers but Spotlight won over the academy.” This year’s winners:

Back in December, we posted the full list of nominations for the SAG Awards. As Cara Buckley notes in the NYT, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri “continued its steady march toward Oscar glory” last night, taking “best ensemble, best actress and best supporting actor prizes. Following a muted start, talk of women’s empowerment came to dominate the night, and potentially awkward moments were averted after two nominees recently accused of misconduct—Aziz Ansari, who was a no-show, and James Franco, who wore a pained look whenever the camera swung his way—were bested by the competition.” The winners:
