Before the season ends, we’re taking one last holiday jaunt with Summer Vacations, our free festival on Hulu. From a whimsical Czechoslovak New Wave reverie to a bittersweet French tale of a seaside rendezvous, this week’s lineup includes Jean Renoir’s A Day in the Country, Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday, Ingmar Bergman’s Summer with Monika, Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’Avventura, Eric Rohmer’s La collectionneuse, Jiří Menzel’s Capricious Summer, and George Sluizer’s The Vanishing.
Also among these sun-soaked classics is Hiroshi Shimizu’s tender 1941 romance Ornamental Hairpin. This lyrical wartime drama centers on a soldier (played by the great Ozu collaborator Chishu Ryu) who is forced to extend his stay at a mountain spa after cutting his foot on a geisha’s hairpin. His fateful encounter with the object’s owner leads to romance, but the lovers soon find themselves caught between their budding relationship and the harsh realities of war-torn Japan. Widely regarded as one of Shimizu’s finest works, Ornamental Hairpin is now available to watch for free below or at Hulu. And remember, if you subscribe to Hulu for just $7.99 a month, you can see more than 900 Criterion films commercial-free, anytime.
