Tonight, Ciné, in Athens, Georgia, will kick off its Son of Schlocktoberfest horror series with a screening of Roman Polanski’s 1968 occult masterpiece Rosemary’s Baby. This macabre adaptation of Ira Levin’s best-selling novel stars Mia Farrow as Rosemary Woodhouse, a young woman who begins to feel a mounting sense of unease after she and her struggling actor husband, Guy (John Cassavetes), move into an old New York City apartment. After learning she is pregnant, Rosemary is plagued by nightmarish visions that lead her to believe both Guy and her intrusive elderly neighbors (Sidney Blackmer and an Oscar-winning Ruth Gordon, both quietly terrifying) are involved in a satanic plot against her and her unborn child. Polanski’s Hollywood breakthrough won the director both box-office success and critical acclaim and remains one of the most psychologically penetrating horror films ever made.
