You’ll never look at a crucifix the same way again after you watch this week’s Criterion Collection Edition, Multiple Maniacs, the deranged sophomore feature by trash cinema icon John Waters. This gleefully grotesque, low-budget satire stars the director’s unstoppable muse Divine as the leader of a troupe of misfits mounting a freakish traveling show. Now available on the Criterion Channel, our recently released edition features a commentary by Waters and new interviews with many of his Baltimore-based collaborators.
Also up this week: a pair of spine-tingling tales from Roman Polanski and Guillermo del Toro, and a double bill that explores the limits of paternal love.
Tuesday’s Short + Feature: The Lamp and Cronos
Two masters of the macabre put their creepiest wares on sale. First up is Roman Polanski’s early short The Lamp (1959), an eerie portrait of a dollmaker’s workshop after-hours that displays the young filmmaker’s brilliant use of atmospheric camerawork and sound design. It’s followed by Guillermo del Toro’s haunting horror fable, in which a bloodthirsty scarab bestows immortality on an antiques dealer. And in case you missed it, check out del Toro's conversation with MythBusters’ Adam Savage in the latest installment of our Adventures in Moviegoing series.
Friday Night Double Feature: Late Spring and Donkey Skin
Just in time for Father’s Day this weekend, this double feature asks if a father and daughter can be too close. Two celebrated figures of world cinema answer in wildly different registers: Yasujiro Ozu with a heartbreaking tale of devotion and loss, Jacques Demy with a visually dazzling riff on a Charles Perrault fairy tale.
