Few Hollywood directors have moved between animation and live action with as much skill and success as Brad Bird. Since making his directorial debut in 1999 with The Iron Giant, he has gone on to helm two of Pixar’s most acclaimed releases, Ratatouille and The Incredibles (both of which earned him an Academy Award), and more recently has brought his gift for fast-paced visual storytelling to the action films Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Tomorrowland. For our latest episode of Adventures in Moviegoing, now available on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck, Bird chats with Pulitzer Prize–winning film critic Joe Morgenstern about his memories of falling in love with cinema and his “ever-widening ocean” of creative inspirations. The clip below features the director discussing how his childhood drawings foreshadowed his love of moviemaking and how he first came to appreciate the “dream language” of great auteurs like Alfred Hitchcock and Billy Wilder. Watch this exclusive new interview in full on the Channel, along with Bird’s selection of six all-time favorites, including Stranger Than Paradise, Yojimbo, and Safety Last!
