BoJack Horseman (2014)
“I was at the stock market today, I did a business.” — Vincent Adultman
BoJack is half-man, half-horse, and all washed up. He’s also the star of Netflix’s first animated show, BoJack Horseman, a dark comedy about an equine sitcom has-been trying to reclaim his relevance in the Hollywood Hills.
The show is the product of comedy writer Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s heartfelt humour and cartoonist Lisa Hanawalt’s lifelong obsession with drawing goofy animals. The opening sequence directed by Mike Roberts and with music by Patrick and Ralph Carney features BoJack floating through the spaces of his life, disconnected from everyone and everything, staring bleakly into the eyes of the viewer. The sequence is colourful and intricate, the details inviting close inspection – particularly as they evolve over the course of the series.
The title sequence, and the ensuing show, is powered by BoJack and his ennui, and the screwy cast of characters in his orbit. Hot on the heels of the release of its second season, we chat with the show’s creators and main titles director about how to entice an audience into watching a cartoon about a depressed talking horse.
A discussion with Creator RAPHAEL BOB-WAKSBERG, Production and Character Designer LISA HANAWALT, and Main Titles Director MIKE ROBERTS
Give us a little background on yourselves, and how you got to where you are today.
Raphael: Well, I’m a comedy writer! I was a play-writer in college. Bard College, which is a small liberal arts college in New York, and that’s where I met the other Old English guys. Most of my experience comes from them, working with them, being in the writing room with them and collaborating. Once we all graduated, I moved out to LA and I got a…

Man Seeking Woman (2015)
“If you can't do spiral eyes, how do you hit on girls?” — Mike
A young New Yorker walks away, seemingly calm from a freshly dead relationship, with some garbage bags, a terrarium, and his own personal raincloud overhead. Oh, and dead birds fall on the poor schlub. And that’s the joke. That’s the absurdist, spastic humor of Simon Rich’s Man Seeking Woman, a sitcom that makes literal what we all too often internalize in the emotional minefields of love.
To convey that sense of romantic and manic whiplash, Digital Kitchen assembled the FXX show’s title sequence with a series of snappy black-and-white animations. Hurtling forward through an ever changing three-by-five grid, we get tidy little doodles of trolls, trains, and tridents; frowning condoms, wilting flowers, cassettes, skulls, and ray guns. How best to put it? It’s a giddy bit of nonsense that hints at Man Seeking Woman’s disparate, breakneck comedy. It’s like the atomic, twitchy love-child of Keith Haring and Tex Avery; a stream-of-consciousness cartoon, complete with sight gags, a punchy trip-hop theme, and cool, clean illustrations.
A discussion with Executive Creative Director CAMM ROWLAND of Digital Kitchen.
Give us a little background on yourself and what you do.
I’m the executive creative director of Digital Kitchen (DK) and DK Studios Chicago, where I’ve been since 2003. I have the privilege of working with a diverse and talented team of creative folks here, making work for some great entertainment and brand clients.
How did you become involved with Man Seeking Woman?
Spencer Berman at Broadway Video, Lorne Michaels’ studio, reached out to us. The show’s director, Jonathan Krisel, had recommended DK. They sent over the pilot, which…

Lady in a Cage (1964)
“You’re here. That’s what you done.” — Randall Simpson O’Connell
The year was 1964, and a simmering unease was spreading across the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis, the testing of nuclear weapons by the superpowers of the time, the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the Boston Strangler, the murder of Kitty Genovese – these were all fresh in the minds of Americans. It was in this climate that a new film genre emerged and began to take hold – a little too close to home.
From the first frame of Lady in a Cage – the opening Paramount logo encased in vertical stripes – we’re made aware that this is a film envisioned as a whole, as an amalgam of parts fused to fit just so. In the film, Olivia de Havilland plays an injured middle-aged woman trapped between floors in her home elevator on a hot summer’s day. Quickly, her world comes crashing down around her, and forces beyond her control and her home invade. The film is a surprisingly savage thriller that walks a delicate line between comically dark social commentary and terrible cruelty. Director Walter Grauman, known primarily for his TV work and B-movies, here emphasizes cinematography (by golden age pictureman Lee Garmes) and an attention…
