Sally Cruikshank: A Career Retrospective, Part 2
“The more you draw, the more your line expresses who you are.” — Sally Cruikshank
If you could create a world of your own, what would it be like? Would you roll back time, would gravity exist? Would you take advantage of the infinite possibilities before you?
Sally Cruikshank’s animations delight in those possibilities, pushing beyond standard notions of how cartoons should look, move, and sound, unleashing a flock of bizarro creatures and their bold accoutrements. With her award-winning 1975 film Quasi at the Quackadero, Cruikshank created a surrealist gem of unearthly landscapes and outrageous characters. The film earned her international attention, an entry into the National Film Registry, features in books with the word “Greatest” in their title, and spots in major museum exhibits.
After Quasi came several more shorts, a number of innovative commercials, and Hollywood. Throughout the ’80s, Cruikshank found herself being courted to create opening titles for major motion pictures. Her first, Ruthless People, opened the door to others. In each of her title sequences for Mannequin, Loverboy, and Madhouse, Cruikshank leads viewers into weird and wacky territory. The credits are dismantled, dismembered, and done away with. In a flurry of Memphis design and greed, Ancient Egypt, aliens, and Philadelphia, love, lust, and anchovies, and houseguests gone awry, Cruikshank weaves a series of journeys loaded with narrative clues, historical references, and hilarious gags. Soon, however, her talents were snatched up by Sesame Street, a veritable dream job for animators of the time, where she stayed for more than a decade.
As the ’90s slowed their roll and the Internet began to gain momentum, Cruikshank saw an opportunity. She learned Javascript and PHP, Flash animation, created sassy interactive games, and experimented with cartoons for mobile phones.
Throughout her career, Cruikshank’s evocative work has been a door to fantasy, to radiant visions on the edge of dreams, to worlds both past and possible. In experimenting with the bounds of imagination and humour, Cruikshank took to any medium available to her, from cel to film to digital to code, and pushed its buttons.
To be a formidable cartoonist and animator, one must build a world of one’s own. Sally Cruikshank does just that.
In Part Two of our two-part feature interview with Sally Cruikshank, we dive into her film title sequences, her animations for famed children’s show Sesame Street, her pioneering experiments in interactive digital art, and her advice for animators working today.
So, you had just wrapped up some commercials and your first title sequence project, for Ruthless People. We're still in the late ’80s. What came next for you?
SC: I think it was Mannequin! Yeah. I still have all of the storyboards. They’re very pretty. I would do them in an 8.5x11 format, which isn’t usually how people did storyboards, but it made it easy to Xerox.
I saw the movie and I didn’t think much of it. I believe it was the editor who brought me in, Richard Halsey, and they had a problem. They were aware that they…

Sally Cruikshank: A Career Retrospective, Part 1
““Animation is sort of this open door to fantasy-land. You’re only limited by what you can draw.”” — Sally Cruikshank
Sally Cruikshank has never neglected the possibilities of the imagination. This is why she is responsible for some of the most vibrant and extraordinary worlds ever put to film. As an animator, filmmaker, and early Internet developer, Cruikshank takes illustration and spins it into world-building, creating lush, dynamic environments where the laws of our physical universe are bent, broken, and made new, where anything and everything can open its eyes, grow a mouth, and talk back.
Taking inspiration from cartooning greats like Crumb, Fleischer, and McCay, and combining it with her own warped sense of humour, Cruikshank spins a gaggle of characters including talking ducks, anthropomorphized vehicles and furniture, and motley creatures from beyond, always walking that serpentine line between the world in front of us and the one in our periphery.
After whetting her appetite for animation in Massachusetts in the late ’60s, Cruikshank moved to San Francisco to pursue it more deeply, finding a willing patron in studio owner Gregg Snazelle. In 1975 she wrote, animated, and directed Quasi at the Quackadero, her most well-known and lauded masterwork of a film. It became one of the first countercultural films to find popularity on the midnight movie circuit and to break through to a mainstream audience.
In the ensuing years, Cruikshank strode ever forward, making more independent short films, contributing opening titles and animated sequences to major motion films, working with cherished children’s show Sesame Street, and diving into the strange abyss of the early Internet. Her work has been inducted into the National Film Registry and screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
While Sally Cruikshank is not yet a household name, she is responsible for some of the most innovative animated works in American history. In embracing psychedelia, the infinite, and the possibilities of line, shape, and sound, she lays bare the bones of the medium. Her work shines in the obvious joy it takes in itself, in the sheer exuberance of animating. Cruikshank’s liberties become our own, and we share the delight of creating a brilliantly bonkers inhabited world and letting anything happen. And she lets it all happen, all right.
In part one of our two-part feature interview with Sally Cruikshank, we discuss Sally's first animated shorts, her commercial work at Snazelle Films, and her first forays into animating sequences for major motion pictures.
Part One
So, maybe before we get into the major film work and the commercials and Sesame Street and the National Film Registry, we can start at the basics. How did you get into animation?
SC: Well, I was an art major in school at Smith. In my senior year, I taught myself about animation and made a film. A professor helped me set up a photo enlarger and that got me started. I graduated early from Smith and went on to the San Francisco Art Institute because I wanted to get as far away from New England as possible!…

Beyond Clueless (2014)
“High school is hypnotic. It ticks and tocks, drawing us into a world we know all too well. From memories, dreams, and most of all, from the movies.” — Fairuza Balk, Narrator
What if all those American teen movies from the ’90s and early 2000s took place in the same universe? What if Crash Override and Cher Horowitz and Laura Palmer all went to the same high school? In the cleverly cut opening to director Charlie Lyne’s essay film Beyond Clueless, their worlds are brought together in one long hallway of jeers and sneers, smug smiles, and adolescent longing.
Made entirely of clips, Beyond Clueless does with editing for film what the album Endtroducing… did with sampling for music. Shepherded by the voice of Fairuza Balk, the film is a bricolage of footage meticulously collected from over 200 films, weaving together an era of cliques and hierarchies, baggy pants and chokers, beepers and laptops, with a dash of apple pie and occultism.
For the title sequence, Charlie Lyne splices these teenage hells into one world and unites them with the help of composing team Summer Camp (Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey) and illustrator Hattie Stewart. Summer Camp’s theme is light and dynamic, finely straddling that space between nostalgic shoegaze and modern pop, while Stewart’s small but energetic white scrawls plant the sequence firmly in its world.
A conversation with director CHARLIE LYNE and illustrator HATTIE STEWART.
So, Charlie. Warm us up with a little background on yourself. How did you start out in film, and how did you get here?
Charlie: I started a movie blog called Ultra Culture when I was 16, and through that I slowly managed to get freelance work as a film critic.
Now I write a weekly column for The Guardian and also write for Sight & Sound, Little White Lies, and a few other outlets, though most of my time is now taken up with filmmaking. I'm making another essay film…
